摘要
Cancercelldormancyisthemaincauseofcancerrecurrenceandfailureoftherapyasdormantcellsevadenotonlytheanticancerdrugsbutalsothehostimmunesystem.Thesedormantcellsveilthemselvesfromdetectionbyimagingand/orusingbiomarkers,whichimposesanadditionalproblemintargetingsuchcells.Asimilarformofhibernationprocessknownasencystationisstudiedindetailforpathogenicunicellulareukaryoticmicroorganisms.Byexaminationusingmicroarraygeneexpressionprofiles,immunocytochemistrytools,andsiRNAsduringtheprocessofencystation,understandingthecovertfeaturesofcancercelldormancyasproposedcouldbepossible.Thisknowledgecanbeextendedtodormantcancercellstouncoverthemechanismsthatunderliethisghost,yetdangerousstateofhumancancers.Weproposeastrategytoinducedormancyandexitthisstatebyapplicationofknowledgegainedfromtheencystationinductionandretrievalprocessesinpathogeniceukaryoticmicroorganisms.Giventhatearlydetectionandcharacterizationofdormantmalignanttumorcellsisimportantasageneralstrategytomonitorandpreventthedevelopmentofovertmetastaticdisease,thishomologymayenablethedesignoftherapiesthatcouldeitherawakethedormantcellfromdormancytomakeitavailablefortherapiesorprolongsuchaphasetomakecancerappearasachronicdisease
