Insightsintolearnererrorsvarygreatly:Contrastiveanalystsholdtheviewthaterrorsarefaultyversionofthetargetlanguageandsignsoflearningfailureandthusmustbecorrected;Corderregardslearnererrorsasevidenceofthelearner’sactivelearningandasthemostimportantsourceofinformationaboutthenatureofhisknowledge;DulayandBurl’sresearchshowsthatlearnererrorsaredevelopmental;Taronenoticesthatoccurrenceoflearnererrorschangesindifferentsituationsaccordingtodifferenttasks;Krashenmaintainsthatlearnererrorscanbetotallyignoredforthesimplereasonthattheywilldisappearatacertainstage.Wesuggestthaterrorcorrectiontakeintoconsiderationthefollowingfactors:(l)source,(2)type,(S)acquisitionorder,(4)tasktypeandcontext;andthaterrorcorrectionshouldn’t(1)hindercommunication,(2)discouragethelearner,(3)putthelearneronthedefensive,(4)causeanxiety.
