Thelabels'Hellenes'and'Hellas'areoftenconsideredtobecollectivenamesfortheGreeksandhaveacloseconnectionwiththeterm'Panhellenes.'ThisarticlestudiestheprocessofnamingtheGreeksintheArchaicperiodandtherelationshipbetweenthesecollectivenamesandthenotionofPanhellenism.Byaliteraryandetymologicalexaminationoftherelevantsources,itsuggeststhatthedesignation'Hellenes'probablydidnotevolvefromthatof'Panhellenes'andthattheterms'Hellenes'and'Hellas,'butnot'Panhellenes,'probablyhavegenericsignificanceinthesixthcentury.Furthermore,withtheOlympicGamesandtheHellenion,aGreeksanctuaryinNaucratis,astwostudycases,thearticleshowsthecomplexityofthedevelopmentofGreekidentification.Ontheonehand,collectivenameslike'Hellenes'and'Hellas'haveacentripetalforceontrans-regionaloccasions,andontheother,thoseeventsalsofeaturecompetition,privilegeandexpresscivicidentitiesofbothindividualandcommunity,whichseemstobedivisive.
