Mesozoic Deformation and Its Geological Significance in the Southern Margin of the South China Sea

摘要 Thepre-EocenehistoryoftheregionaroundthepresentSouthChinaSeaisnotwellknown.Newmulti-channelseismicprofilesprovidevaluableinsightsintotheprobableMesozoichistoryofthisregion.Detailedstructuralandstratigraphicinterpretationsofthemulti-channelseismicprofiles,calibratedwithrelevantdrillinganddredgingdata,showmajorMesozoicstructuralfeatures.AstructuralrestorationwasdonetoremovetheCenozoictectonicinfluenceandcalculatetheMesozoictectoniccompressionratios.Theresultsindicatethattwogroupsofcompressivestresswithdiametricallyoppositeorientations,S(S)E–N(N)WandN(N)W–S(S)E,wereactiveduringtheMesozoic.Thecompressionratiovaluesgraduallydecreasefromnorthtosouthandfromwesttoeastineachstressorientation.Thephenomenamayberelatedtotheopeningoftheproto-SouthChinaSea(thenlocatedinsouthoftheNanshablock)andtherateatwhichtheNanshablockdriftednorthwardinthelateJurassictolateCretaceous.TheNanshablockdriftednorthwarduntilitcollidedandsuturedwiththesouthernChinamargin.TheopeningofthepresentSouthChinaSeamayberelatedtothissuturezone,whichwasatectoniczoneofweakness.
