THEBeginningofWinterusuallyfallsonNovember7or8.InnorthernChina,thetemperaturebeginstodropbelowzeroandwaterfreezes;whileinsouthernChina,thereisstillaperiodofunseasonablywarmcalledIndianSummer.ThissolartermissoimportantthatsincetheZhouDynasty(1046-256BC),theemperorandhiscivilandmilitaryofficialswouldholdaceremonyonthatdaytooffersacrificestoHeaven,celestialbeings,andancestors,prayingforagoodharvestandawell-offlifeforhispeople.
