Thereisagrowingneedworldwidetotakemedicalcaretodistantlocationsfarfromthemainurbancenters,particularlytoruralareas.Furthermore,thereistheethicalimperativetoprovideequalaccesstomedicalcaretoallpatients,regardlessoftheirplaceofresidence,soastosatisfyanincreasinglydemandingpopulation.Awidespreadproblem,fromwhichcardiologyisnotexcepted,istheinsufficientnumberofspecialistsandtheirunevendistribution.Theupsurgeininformationandcommunicationstechnologyhasmadeavailablealargecollectionoftools,mainlycomputers,smartphones,e-mail,andtheInternet,tonamejustafew,tomeettheneedsofcommunicationbetweenindividualsandorganizations.ThisarticledefinestelemedicineanddescribesitsapplicationinthepracticeofcardiologyanditsimpactinChile.
