摘要
GarySnyderisafamousAmericanpoetinthe1960s.HisworksoftenreflectZenthought,whichhighlyinfluencedtheBeatGenerationofthattime,andeventhewholewesternsociety.ThisarticleattemptstodiscusssomeofthepossibleaspectsinwhichSnyder’sZendivertsfromChineseZenthought.Tofindouttheanswer,fourofSnyder’spoetrycollectionsweremainlyconsulted,aswellasinformationabouttheenvironmentthathe’dbeenlivingin.Thediscrepancythisarticlewillshowcaseisthree-folded:first,whatSnyderpursuedmightbe"squareZen",whichisdifferentfromChineseZen;second,hispoemsintegratedsomeideasfromIndianfolklores,thuscontradictingthatofZen;third,givingconsiderationtohiswesternbackgroundandspecifichistoricalenvironment,hemightmisinterpretChineseZenthoughtunconsciouslyorintentionally.ThisisanareawhichsofarnocurrentstudiesaboutSnyderhaveprobedinto,sotheresultsarejusttentativeandexploratory.
