摘要
Thereisincreasingobservationalevidenceindicatingthatcrystallineinterfacialwaterlayersplayacentralroleinevolutionandbiology.Forinstanceincellularrecognitionprocesses,inparticularduringfirstcontactevents,wherecellsdecideuponsurvivalorenteringapoptosis.Understandingwaterlayersisthuscrucialinbiomedicalengineering,specificallyinthedesignofbiomaterialsinspiredbybiomimeticprinciples.Whereasthereisampleexperimentalevidenceforcrystallineinterfacialwaterlayersonsurfacesinair,theirsubaquaticpresencecouldnotbeverifieddirectly,sofar.Analysingapolaritydependentasym-metryinthesurfaceconductivityonhydrogenatednanocrystallinediamond,weshowthatcrystallineinterfacialwaterlayerspersistsubaquatically.Nanoscopicinterfacialwaterlayerswithanorderdifferentfromthatofbulkwaterhavebeenidentifiedatroomtemperatureonbothhydrophilicandhydrophobicmodelsurfaces-inairandsubaquatically.Theirgeneralizationandsystematicinclusionintothecatalogueofphysicalandchemicaldeterminantsofbiocompatibilitycompletethebiomimetictriangle.
