摘要
Awidevarietyofdifferenttypesofmicroorganismsareknowntoproduceintracellularenergyandcarbonstorageproducts,whichhavebeengenerallydescribedasbeingpoly(β-hydroxybutyrate),PHB,butwhichare,moreoftenthannot,copolymerscontainingdifferentalkylgroupsattheβ-position.Hence,PHBbelongstothefamilyofpoly(β-hydroxyalkanoastes),PHA,allofwhichareusuallyformedasintracellularinclusionsinbacteriaunderunbalancedgrowthconditions.Recently,itbecameofindustrialinteresttoevaluatethesePHApolyestersasnaturalbiodegradableandbiocompatibleplasticsforawiderangeofpossibleapplications,suchassurgicalsuturesorpackagingcontainers.Forindustrialapplications,thecontrolledincorporationofrepeatingunitswithdifferentchainlengthsintoaseriesofcopolymersisdesirableinordertoproducepolyesterswitharangeofmaterialpropertiesbecausephysicalandchemicalcharacteristicsdependstronglyonthepolymercomposition.Such"tailor-made"copolymerscanbeproducedundercontrolledgrowthconditionsinthat,ifadefinedmixtureofsubstratesforacertaintypeofmicroorganismsissupplied,awelldefinedandreproduciblecopolymerisformed.
