TheRitzprojectionsoftheellipticproblem（?）(aij（?）ju)+c0u=finΩ,u=0on（?）Ω,andthequasilineareilipticproblem（?）（ai（x,Du））+a0（x,Du）=0inΩ,u=0on（?）Ωwithlinearfiniteelementsadmitanasymptoticerrorexpansion,respectively,forcertainclassesof“uniform”meshes.ThisprovidesthetheoreticaljustificationfortheuseofRichardsonextrapolationforincreasingtheaccuracyoftheschemefromO（h2）toO（h4|lnh|）.
