AnewchapterbeganinJapan'spoliticalhistorywhenYukioHatoyamaandhisDemocraticParty(DPJ)replacedthelong-governingLiberalDemocraticParty(LDP),thuscreatingthelong-contemplatedstructureofalternaterulebythetwomajorpoliticalparties.Attachingmoreimportancetoindependenceindiplomacy,theHatoyamaCabinetisexpectedtostandforarepositioningofitsrelationswiththeUnitedStatesandmakegreaterdiplomaticeffortsinAsiawiththefocusonbuildinganEastAsianCommunitysoastoadapttotheevolvinginternationalrelationsintheAsia-Pacificregion.
