  • 简介:AbstractInfectious disease outbreaks, such as 'Coronavirus disease 2019' (COVID-19), can constitute major global health threats with far-reaching consequences. As outbreaks develop, the international scientific community must provide high-quality scientific research-ready biological samples to solve the existing clinical and epidemiological questions to better combat the pandemic. Such examples are provided by dedicated biobank facilities, the latter collecting increasingly high volumes of biological samples. However, the more significant concentrations of infectious or potentially infectious biological materials can create a safety risk. The current short report describes the first attempt to identify the published scientific works on biobanking and safety. Three broad thematic areas have been identified: the physical security relevant to staff and sample integrity, the data safety aspects, and the governance parameters relating to the previous two. While the current publications reflect a broad alignment with existing standards and best practices in the biobanking field, they also demonstrate an opportunity for further in-depth work on this field in the post-COVID-19 era.

  • 简介:AbstractBackground:Whether occupation has an impact on contact heat evoked potential (CHEP) results has not been investigated. In this study, we investigated the difference of CHEP parameters between knowledge workers and unskilled labors. Methods:A total of 137 healthy participants were recruited between November 20, 2014 and December 31, 2016. All participants underwent neurologic examination, laboratory examination, and nerve conduction studies. CHEP was performed on four body sites: the upper border of the distal third of the volar forearm, the upper border of the distal third of the lateral leg, the spinous process of seventh cervical vertebrae (C7), and the spinous process of 12th thoracic vertebrae (T12). Independent t test and nonparametric test were performed using SPSS software to compare the difference of the CHEP parameters between knowledge workers and unskilled labors. Results:The "N2 latency/height" (Z = -2.290, P = 0.022) and "P2 latency/height" (Z = -2.020, P = 0.043) on the volar forearm of unskilled labors significantly increased than those of knowledge workers. The "N2 latency/height" (F = 6.348, P = 0.016) and "P2 latency/height" (F = 5.920, P = 0.018) in the distal leg of unskilled labors significantly prolonged than those of knowledge workers. The N2-P2 amplitude (F = 5.797, P = 0.020) in the distal leg of unskilled labors significantly decreased than those of knowledge workers. Conclusions:Our study found that significantly prolonged N2 latency and P2 latency and significantly decreased N2-P2 amplitude in the distal leg and the volar forearm in unskilled labors as to knowledge workers.

  • 简介:AbstractThe pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has already evoked massive influence. The global pandemic has been ravaging the whole world for a year, with the number of confirmed human infection cases over 150 million and a death toll exceeding 3 million. Although the genomic sequence of the cognate pathogen SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) has been quickly determined, there are still many unknown aspects, including the virus origin and evolution trend, and the effectiveness of current vaccines and drugs against the mutating virus. This review summarizes current knowledge and advances about COVID-19, including virus origin, transmission and infection, with the aim to improve the understanding of COVID-19 and provide a new perspective for future studies.

  • 简介:AbstractBackground:Cerebrovascular disease has become the leading cause of death in China. The purpose of this article is to analyze China's contribution to the interventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. Methods:Bibliometric analysis was used for evaluating the quantity, quality, research hotspots, and cooperation network of publications regarding interventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases from China. These articles were searched from the database of Web of Science Core Collection. The authors, publication years, citation times, regions, and source journals of retrieved articles were recorded. Network analysis and visualization were performed on Citespace5.6.Results:From 1991 to 2019, a total of 5052 articles regarding cerebrovascular intervention were contributed by Chinese researchers. The number of publications from China grew fastest annually in the latest 5 years among countries. These publications were cited 61,216 times, with 12.12 average citations per item. The h-index was 82. Affiliated hospitals of Capital Medical University contributed most articles. Cerebral ischemia and intracranial aneurysm were the most popular keywords over the three decades. The timeline view of keywords indicated that cerebral ischemia always was a hot spot. Stent techniques were the main treatment tools and still had a strong developing trend. Neural regeneration and neuroprotection were the hot topics of basic researches related to cerebrovascular intervention. Conclusions:The number of researches grows rapidly in China over the decades, but the quality still needs further improvement. The increasing contributions of Chinese researchers to the global knowledge system of cerebrovascular intervention are promising.

  • 简介:AbstractHost immune responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), especially in children, are still under investigation. Children with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) constitute a significant study group of immune responses as they rarely present with severe clinical manifestations, require hospitalization, or develop complications such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The deciphering of children's immune responses during COVID-19 infection will provide information about the protective mechanisms, while new potential targets for future therapies are likely to be revealed. Despite the limited immunological studies in children with COVID-19, this review compares data between adults and children in terms of innate and adaptive immunity to SARS-CoV-2, discusses the possible reasons why children are mostly asymptomatic, and highlights unanswered or unclear immunological issues. Current evidence suggests that the activity of innate immunity seems to be crucial to the early phases of SARS-CoV-2 infection and adaptive memory immunity is vital to prevent reinfection.

  • 简介:AbstractTwin anemia polycythemia sequence (TAPS) is a chronic form of unbalanced feto-fetal transfusion through minuscule placental anastomoses in monochorionic twin pregnancies, leading to anemia in the donor twin and polycythemia in the recipient twin. TAPS can occur spontaneously in up to 5% of monochorionic twins or can arise in 2%-16% of cases after incomplete laser surgery for twin-twin transfusion syndrome. TAPS can develop across the entire second and third trimester. Antenatal diagnosis for TAPS is reached via Doppler measurement of the fetal middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity, showing an increased velocity in the donor, combined with a decreased velocity in the recipient. Treatment options for TAPS include expectant management, preterm delivery, intrauterine blood transfusion with or without a partial exchange transfusion, fetoscopic laser surgery and selective feticide. The best treatment option is unclear and is currently being investigated in an international multicenter randomized trial (the TAPS trial). Spontaneous fetal demise occurs in 5%-11% of TAPS twins, more often in donors (8%-18%) than in recipients (2%-5%). Severe long-term neurodevelopmental impairment is seen in 9% of TAPS twins, with donors having an increased risk for cognitive impairment and hearing problems (15%).

  • 简介:AbstractObjective:Awareness regarding the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation are commonly neglected in Asian countries. This study sought to evaluate the ultraviolet radiation knowledge and photoprotective behaviors of university students in Indonesia. Methods:This observational cross-sectional was conducted at Pelita Harapan University, Indonesia. Results:A total of 89 (45.4%) medical students and 107 (54.6%) nonmedical students participated in this study. Their mean age was 21.03 ± 2.03 years, and 46.4% of them had Fitzpatrick type III skin. Medical students as well as older students exhibited a higher level of knowledge regarding photoprotection (P ≤ 0.05). Factors related to good photoprotective behaviors were sex, older age, and average expenditure on skincare. Further analysis revealed that a high level of knowledge regarding photoprotection was related to acceptable photoprotective behaviors (P = 0.01; odds ratio = 1.97; 95% confidence interval = 1.13-3.54).Conclusions:Knowledge regarding sun-related damage and practice of photoprotective behaviors were low among the participants. The results indicate that formal education and academic subjects should incorporate the topic of sun-related damage and promote the practice of photoprotective behaviors early on to increase awareness among populations.

  • 简介:AbstractIntracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS)-related large vascular occlusion (LVO) was an intractable subtype of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), which always needed rescue angioplasty and stenting and complicated the procedure of endovascular recanalization. Diagnosing ICAS-LVO accurately and early was helpful for both clinical treatment and trials. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was unable to provide an early and rapid diagnosis of ICAS-LVO based on current studies. A variety of pre-DSA methods had been used to distinguish ICAS-LVO with other subtypes of ischemic stroke, such as medical histories, clinical presentations, computed tomography or angiography (CT/CTA), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI/MRA). This article briefly reviewed the status quo of the diagnosis and treatment of ICAS-LVO and summarized early diagnostic methods of ICAS-LVO from different aspects.

  • 简介:摘要Background and objectivesIn many patients after stroke, spasticity develops over time, resulting in a decrease in the patient′s independence, pain, worsening mood, and, consequently, lower quality of life. In the last ten years, a rich arsenal of physical agents to reduce muscle tone such as extracorporeal shock therapy (ESWT) wave has come through. The aim of this narrative review article is to present the current state of knowledge on the use of ESWT as a supplement to the comprehensive rehabilitation of people after stroke suffering from spasticity.MethodsThe PubMed and PEDro databases were searched for papers published in English from January 2000 to December 2020, 22 of which met inclusion criteria for clinical studies related to post-stroke spasticity management with ESWT.ResultsA total of 22 studies including 468 post-stroke patients-11 reports with the upper limb (267 patients) and 10 reports within the lower limb (201 patients), as well as one report including both upper and lower limb. We focused our attention on clinical and methodological aspects. Therefore, we performed the assessment of enrolled studies in terms of methodological quality using the PEDro and level of evidence using the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Furthermore, we indicated implications for clinical practice in using ESWT for post-stroke spasticity management. Moreover, we discussed a suggestion for future research directions.ConclusionsIn conclusion, an ESWT effectively reduces muscle tone in people with spastic limb after stroke. Further, ESWT is safe and free of undesirable side effects. The mechanism of action of ESWT on muscles affected by spasticity is still unknown. To date, no standard parameters of ESWT in post-stroke spasticity regarding intensity, frequency, location, and the number of sessions has been established. Further research, meeting the highest standards, is needed to establish uniform muscle stimulation parameters using ESWT.
