简介:ThismeetingwasheldinthehistoriccityofDurham,northeasternEngland,8-10^thJuly,with145limestoneloversattendingfromallroundtheworld,somecamefromasfarafieldasAustralia,IndiaandJapan,andtherewere30fromNorthAmerica.ThisseriesofmeetingswasstartedbyRobinBathurstin1959andthefirst8wereheldinLiverpool,whereRobinwaslecturerandthenprofessorofgeology.Theaimhasalwaysbeentohaveasmallfocusedconferencewithplentyoftimefordiscussion.
简介:GeologicalresearchontheMediterraneanregionispresentlycharacterizedbythetransitionfromdisciplinarytomultidisciplinaryresearch,aswellasfromnationaltointernationalinvestigations.Inordertosynthesizeandintegratethevastdisciplinaryandnationaldatasetswhichareavailable,itisnecessarytoimplementmaximuminteractionamonggeoscientistsofdifferentbackgrounds.Thecreationofproject-orientedtaskforcesinuniversitiesandotherresearchinstitutions,aswellasthedevelopmentoflargeinternationalcooperationprograms,isinstrumentalinpursuingsuchamultidisciplinaryandsupranationalapproach.TheTRANSMEDAtlas,anofficialpublicationofthe32ndInternationalGeologicalCongress(Florence2004),istheresultofaninternationalscientificcooperationprogramwhichbroughttogetherforovertwoyearssixtythreestructuralgeologists,geophysicists,marinegeologists,petrologists,sedimentologists,stratigraphers,paleogeographers,andpetroleumgeologistscomingfromeighteencountries,andworkingforthepetroleumindustry,academia,andotherinstitutions,bothpublicandprivate.TheTRANSMEDAtlasprovidesanupdated,synthetic,andcoherentportrayaloftheoverallgeological-geophysicalstructureoftheMediterraneandomainandthesurroundingareas.TheinitialstimulusfortheAtlascamefromtherealizationoftheextremelyheterogeneousnatureoftheexistinggeological-geophysicaldataaboutsuchdomain.Thesedatahavebeengatheredbyuniversities,oilcompanies,geologicalsurveysandotherinstitutionsinseveralcountries,oftenusingdifferentproceduresandstandards.Inaddition,muchofthesedataarewritteninlanguagesandpublishedinoutletsthatarenotreadilyaccessibletothegeneralinternationalreader.Bysynthesizingandintegratingawealthofpreexistingandnewdataderivedfromsurficialgeology,seismicsectionsatvariousscales,andmantletomographies,theTRANSMEDAtlasprovidesforthefirsttimeacoherentgeologicaloverv
