摘要 ThemicrostructuresoffaultrocksfromtheWasatchfaultzoneinUtah(USA)havebeenstudiedusingapolarizingmicroscope,ascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)andanultrahigh-voltageelectronmicroscope(HVHM).Thisfaultzonemayberecognizedasoneawithlonghistoryofseismicactivityaccordingtothemicrostructuralcharacteristicssuchastype,deformationcharacteristics,meltingstructureandsurfacetexturesofthefaultrocks.However,themainfaultnowpresentseemsnottohavebeennoticeablyactivesincethelatePleistocene(Q3),asshownbytheeroded-surfacetextureonthequartzfragmentsinthefaultgouge.Meanwhile,thosefaultssupposedtobestronglyactiveinmoderntimesarebranchingfaultsmuchclosertothebasinsideandarecoveredbytheHolocenesedimentsinthebasin.
