摘要
ThemicrostructuresoffaultrocksfromtheWasatchfaultzoneinUtah（USA）havebeenstudiedusingapolarizingmicroscope,ascanningelectronmicroscope（SEM）andanultrahigh-voltageelectronmicroscope（HVHM）.Thisfaultzonemayberecognizedasoneawithlonghistoryofseismicactivityaccordingtothemicrostructuralcharacteristicssuchastype,deformationcharacteristics,meltingstructureandsurfacetexturesofthefaultrocks.However,themainfaultnowpresentseemsnottohavebeennoticeablyactivesincethelatePleistocene（Q3）,asshownbytheeroded-surfacetextureonthequartzfragmentsinthefaultgouge.Meanwhile,thosefaultssupposedtobestronglyactiveinmoderntimesarebranchingfaultsmuchclosertothebasinsideandarecoveredbytheHolocenesedimentsinthebasin.
