Areviewontheprogressofpowerful2μmsilicafibersourcesinpastdecadesispresented.Wereviewthestate-of-the-artrecordsandrepresentativeachievementsof2μmhigh-average-powercontinuouswave,pulsedfiberlasersandamplifiers,andpowerfulsuperfluorescentsources.Challengeswhichlimitthefurtherpowerscalingof2μmsilicafibersourcesarediscussed,includingpumpingbrightnesslimitation,thermalproblem,andnonlineareffects.Potentialandpromisingroadmapstogobeyondtheselimitations,liketandempumpingandbeamcombining,arediscussed.Prospectsofpowerful2μmsilicafibersourcesarealsopresentedintheendofpaper.
