Effect of the time-weakening friction law during the nucleation process

摘要 Basedondynamicrupturesimulationsonaplanarfaultinahomogeneoushalf-space,weinvestigatedthenucleationprocessesusingthetime-weakeningfrictionlaw.Boththecharacteristictimeandtherupturespeedinthenucleationasperityplayanimportantroleindeterminingrupturebehaviorsonafaultplanefollowingthetime-weakeningfrictionlaw,withwhichrupturestartsfromasinglepointinthenucleationasperityandpropagatesatagivenspeedtowardtheboundaryofthenucleationarea.Rupturewithasmallcharacteristictimeoralargerupturespeedinthenucleationasperitypropagatesearlierfromthehypocenter.Rupturefollowingtheslipweakeningfrictionlawrequiresasmallerradiusofnucleationpatchtohavesimilarrupturefrontcontoursofthetime-weakeningfrictionlaw.Eveniftherupturevelocityinthenucleationpatchofthetime-weakeningfrictionlawincreasestoinfinity,thepeaksliprateinthenucleationasperityissmallerthanthatoftheslip-weakeninglaw.Thepeakgroundvelocitydistributionsofrupturesfollowingthetwofrictionlawsarealsocompared.
