Adaptive Algorithm for Accelerating Direct Isosurface Rendering on GPU

摘要 Directisosurfacevolumerenderingisthemostprominentmodernmethodformedicaldatavisualization.Itisbasedonfindingintersectionpointsbetweentherayscorrespondingtopixelsonthescreenandisosurface.Thisarticledescribesatwo-passalgorithmforacceleratingthemethodonthegraphicprocessingunit(GPU).Onthefirstpass,theintersectionswiththeisosurfacearefoundonlyforasmallnumberofrays,whichisdonebyrenderingintoalower-resolutiontexture.Onthesecondpass,theobtainedinformationisusedtoefficientlycalculatetheintersectionpointsofalltheother.Thenumberofraystouseduringthefirstpassisdeterminedbyusinganadaptivealgorithm,whichrunsonthecentralprocessingunit(CPU)inparallelwiththesecondpassoftherendering.Theproposedapproachallowstosignificantlyspeedupisosurfacevisualizationwithoutqualityloss.Experimentsshowaccelerationupto10timesincomparisonwithacommonraycastingmethodimplementedonGPU.Totheauthors’knowledge,thisisthefastestapproachforraycastingwhichdoesnotrequireanypreprocessingandcouldberunoncommonGPUs.
