Amongthemodernrhetoricaldevices,metonymyandsynecdochearetwoimportantfiguresofspeech,whichareanalogoustoeachotherforbothusethenameofonethingforthatofsomethingelse.Thatistosay,bothoftherhetoricaldevicesinvolvesubstitution.Thusthetwoconceptsareconfusing.Metonymyemphasizesonusingthenameofonethingforthatofsomethingelsewithwhichitisassociated.Synecdocheisafigureofspeechinwhichapartisusedforawhole,anindividualforaclass,amaterialforathing,orthereverseofanyofthese.Bymakingacomparativestudyofthesetwothroughtheconnotationandcategory,theauthorsummarizesthat:theyaretwoindependentfiguresofspeech.
