Awater-compatiblephenolichydroxylmodifiedpolystyreneadsorbent(AM-1)foradsorbingandremovingphenoliccompoundsfromaqueoussolutionswaspreparedbycovalentbondingofphenolichydroxylgroupstothesurfaceofporouspolystyrene-divinylbenzenebeads,thisresincanbeuseddirectlywithoutwettingprocess.AcomparisonofthesorptionproperitesofthenewresinandAmberliteXAD-4towardfourphenoliccompounds,phenol,p-cresol,p-chlorophenol,andp-nitrophenolwasmade.ThecapacitiesofequilibriumadsorptionofAM-1forallfourphenoliccompoundsincreasedaround20%overthatofAmberliteXAD-4,whichmaybecontributedtopheonlhydroxylgrouponthesurfaceandtheunusualpoedistribution.Attheirdilutesolution,theequilibriumadsorptioncapacitiesofAM-1forphenolincreasedaout62%overthatofAmberliteXAD-4,whileequilibriumadsorptioncapacitiesoftheotherthreephenoliccompoundsincreased4-35%,suggestinganadvantageofAM-1overAmberliteXAD-4inthecollectionofphenol.FreundlichisothermequationsandisostericadsorptionenthalpiesforthefourphenoliccompundsindicateaphysicaladsorptionprocessontheAmberliteXAD-4andAM-1resins,ColumnstudiesforphenolshowthatAM-1resinhasexcellentadsorptionanddesorptionperformance.
