Cultureisbroadlyviewedasallthehumanactivitiesthatdefineusasaspecies.″Sturgeon'sLaw″(that90%ofeverythingisinferior)isintroducedtodefendthestudyoffiction,andsciencefictioninparticular,inhighereducationasawayofunderstandingourselvesbetter,andperhapsimprovingtheworldthroughtheincreasedunderstandingoftomorrow'sleaders.Severalwaysofreadingparticularworksofsciencefictionareexamined,likeprovidinghistoricalcontextsforreaders,closereadingandstructuralanalysis,andapplicationoftheoriesbasedonparticularideologiesorfromotherdisciplinesinthesocialandpoliticalsciences(suchasfeministtheory,Marxisttheory,psychologicaltheory,etc.).Aconclusionisdrawnthatforliteraryanalysis,ahybridmethodology,onedevisedindividuallyforeachtext,worksbest.
