HesterPrynne,heroineofHawthorne'sTheScarletLetter,seemsidealizedbythenarrator,yetinherattitudesandbehaviorstherearesomecontradictionsthatneedafurtherstudy.Herroleasamotherplaysavitalpartinallthecontradictions,bringingthefiguretolifefromthesacredshrinemadeforherbythenarrator.TounderstandthesignificanceofHester'smother'sroleinhercontradictionswillrevealacharactermorehumantothereader.
