Thispaperproposesanautomaticmethodofporecombinationrecognition,whichisanimportantfeaturetohardwoodrecognition.Afterextractingedgefromwoodmicroscopiccross-section,basedonareahistogramofthesimilarcircleregions,themethodclassifiesallregionsintotwoclasseswithmaximumbetween-classvariance,soastodistinguishtheporefromothertextures,whicharesimilarinshapesbutdifferentinsizes.Meanwhile,secondobjectivefunctionaboutaverageareaofclosedregionsisusedtoimprovetheporesegmentationperformance.Atlast,themethodusesadjacencydegreeofporesettojudgeporecombination.Theexperimentsdemonstratethatthetaskofporesegmentationcanbecompletedsuccessfullyforallkindsofporedistributionandcombination,andalsothecorrectcombinationsofporesaregiven.
