ThepaperdescribesthevariousenergymanagementtechniquesthatcanbeimplementedforamodernelectricvehiclebyusingMATLAB/Simulink.TheRenaultTwizyvehicleisconsideredforMATLABsimulation.Regenerativebrakingtechniqueisdiscussed,inwhichthekineticenergyisconvertedtoelectricitytochargethebatteryofthevehiclewhenthebrakesareappliedorwhenthevehicleismovingdownthehill.Asolarphotovoltaic(PV)ontheroof-topofthevehicleisimplementedtochargethebatteryusedinthevehicle.Thesimulationresultsarehighlightedandenergymanagementstrategiesarepresented.Theresultsshowedthatthespeedcontrolofdirectcurrent(DC)motorduringthemotoringmodeandregenerativebrakingmodewassuccessfullyachievedbyusingabi-directionalDC-DCconverterandaproportional-integral(PI)controlleratvariousreferencespeedssetbytheuserbyapplyingavariableloadtorquestothemotor.ThesizeofsolarPVonroof-topofthevehiclewasfoundtobe280Wthatchargedthe48Vbatteryofthevehiclebyusingabi-directionalDC-DCconverter,whichwasevaluatedbyusingMATLAB/Simulink.
