Side-matchvectorquantization(SMVQ)achievesbettercompressionperformancethanvectorquantization(VQ)inimagecodingduetoitsexplorationofthedependenceofadjacentpixels.However,SMVQhasthedisadvantageofrequiringexcessivetimeduringtheprocessofcoding.Therefore,thispaperproposesafastimagecodingalgorithmusingindirect-indexcodebookbasedonSMVQ(IIC-SMVQ)toreducethecodingtime.Twocodebooks,namedindirect-indexcodebook(II-codebook)andentire-statecodebook(ES-codebook),aretrainedandutilized.TheII-codebookistrainedbyusingtheLinde-Buzo-Gray(LBG)algorithmfromside-matchinformation,whiletheES-codebookisgeneratedfromtheclusteredresidualblocksonthebasisoftheII-codebook.Accordingtotherelationshipbetweenthesetwocodebooks,thecodewordintheII-codebookcanberegardedasanindicatortoconstructafastsearchpath,whichguidesinquicklydeterminingthestatecodebookfromtheES-codebooktoencodetheto-be-encodedblock.TheexperimentalresultsconfirmthatthecodingtimeoftheproposedschemeisshorterthanthatofthepreviousSMVQ.
