TwogradesofDyneema~?compositelaminateswiththecommercialdesignationsofHB26andHB50werecutintoblockswithorwithoutanedgecrackandcompressedinthelongitudinalfiberdirection.Thecrackedanduncrackedspecimensshowsimilarcompressiveresponsesincludingfailurepatternandfailureload.ThetwogradesofDyneema~?compositesexhibitsdifferentfailuremodes:adiffuse,sinusoidalbucklingpatternforDyneema~?HB50duetoitsweakmatrixconstituentandakinkbandforDyneema~?HB26duetoitsrelativelystrongermatrixconstituent.AneffectivefiniteelementmodelisusedtosimulatethecollapseofDyneema~?composites,andthesensitivityoflaminatecompressiveresponsestotheoveralleffectiveshearmodulus,interlaminarshearstrength,thicknessandimperfectionangleareinvestigated.Thechangeoffailuremodefromkinkbandtosinusoidalbucklingpatternbydecreasingtheinterlaminarshearstrengthisvalidatedbythefiniteelementanalyses.
