AnewmethodforrecognizingChinesecharactersisproposed.Itisbasedontheso-calledfeaturepointsofChinesecharacters.Thefeaturepointsweuseincludethoseonthestrokeofacharacter.i.e.,endpoints.turningpoints,forkpointsandcrosspoints.andthekeypointsonthebackgroundofcharacter.ThismethoddiffersfromthepreviousonesforitcombinesthefeaturepointsonstrokewiththoseonbackgroundanditusesfeaturepointstorecognizeChinesecharactersdirectly.AChinesecharacterrecognitionsystembasedtotop-downdynamicalmatchingoffeaturepointisdeveloped.Thesystemcanrecognizenotonly6763printedsampleSongfontChinesecharactersofsize5.6×5.6mm^2withhighrecognitionrate,butalsothegeneralprintedbooks,magazinesanddocumentswithasatisfactoryrecognitionrateandspeed.
