Thesubcutaneousimplantablecardioverter-defibrillator(ICD)isanoveltechnologyusingasubcutaneous(extrathoracic)systemfortreatmentofpotentiallethalventriculararrhythmias.ItavoidsmanyoftherisksoftransvenousICDimplantation.ItmaybeconsideredinpatientshavinganICDindicationwhodonothaveapacingand/orcardiacresynchronizationtherapyindication,andwhoareunlikelytobenefitfromantitachycardiapacingtherapy.Wereviewpatientselection,systemcomponents,theimplantationtechnique,andscreeningconsiderationsforsubcutaneousICDimplantation.Itsusesinspecificpatientpopulations,includingchildren,patientswithcongenitalheartdisease,hypertrophiccardiomyopathy,orend-stagerenaldisease,andpatientswithpreexistingpacemakers,arehighlighted.Areasoffutureinvestigationarereviewed,includingpotentialusewithleadlesspacingandmagneticresonanceimaging.
