Self-reported participation restrictions in normal hearing individuals in thyroid ontogeny:Evidence of subclinical changes

Purpose:Toverifyevidenceofsubclinicalalterationsthroughself-reportedparticipationrestrictionsinnormalhearinginpidualsandcongenitalhypothyroidismpatients.Methods:Ananalytical,quantitative,cross-sectionalexploratorystudywitha1:1ratio,consistingofaconveniencesampleof86normalhearinginpidualswith(n=42)andwithout(n=44)congenitalhypothyroidismdiagnosis.Allparticipantsunderwenttonalandspeechaudiometry,immitanceanddistortionproductotoacousticemissions.Theresearchersexcludedpeoplewithhearingloss,geneticsyndromesandmetabolicdiseases.Theinstrumentusedforevaluateofself-reportedparticipationrestrictionswastheHHIE-adaptedquestionnaire,composedof25questions,12ofwhichweresocialdomainand13emotionaldomain.Student'sttestandchi-squaretestwereusedforstatisticalanalysisatasignificancelevelof5%.Results:Therewasasignificant(p<0.001)self-reportedparticipationrestrictionsinCH(61.9%),withagreaterrelevanceforthesocialdomain(p=0.002).Therewasagreaterfrequencyofmild/moderate(40.5%)andhigherprevalenceofassociationwithclinicalfactorsandadherencetotreatment.Conclusion:Thefindingsindicatethatself-reportedparticipationrestrictionsinnormalhearinginpidualswithcongenitalhypothyroidismwasmoresignificantthaninthenon-exposedgroup,suggestingevidenceofsubclinicalauditoryabnormalitiesinthispopulation.
