Temporalenvelopeisalowfrequencyamplitudemodulationconveyingsegmentalandsuprasegmentalinformationduringspeechperception.Unfortunately,weseldomfindourselvesincompletelyquietlisteningenvironmentsandnoise,commonlyfoundinthesurroundingenvironment,obscuresboththefinestructurecuesandpartlythetemporalenvelopecuesinspeech.Availabletemporalcontentofspeechemanatingfromnoiseisoftenenoughtoconveyrequiredinformationinnormalhearinginpiduals.However,thecaseisdifferentinolderadults(withandwithouthearingloss)wholacksuchcapabilitiesduetotheimpairmentintemporalprocessing.Thiscallsattentionofaresearchertodelineatetheimportanceoftemporalenhancementofspeechinimprovingspeechperception.Therearemanytemporalenvelopestrategiesavailableintheliterature,buteachonehasitsownlacunae.Anenvelopeenhancementbyadeepbandmodulation(DBM)isfoundtobebeneficialforthoseinpidualswhohavehadatemporalprocessingimpairment.Thereasoncouldbeattributedtothe15dBenhancementinthetemporalenvelopebandwidthbetween3and30Hz,extractedfromeachchannel,whichsignificantlyincreasesthemodulationdepthsuchthatmaskingofaconsonantbyavowelisminimized.Additionally,outputofdeepbandmodulatedspeechisrescaledsuchthatitsdurationincreasesanditprovidesrelativelyeasyaccesstothewordofthelexicon.Thus,inthenearfuture,withmoreexperimentsrelatedtoDBMalgorithm,itcanbeutilizedintherehabilitativedevicestolessentheimpactofthetemporalprocessingimpairment.
