Thetwo-echeloninventorysystemconsideredinthisworkisbasedononesinglesupplier,multipledistributioncenters,andmultipleretailers.Ineachechelonsafetyinventoryiscentralizedstoredinseveralcentralizedstoragecentersandlateraltransshipmentofsafetystockispermittedbetweencentralizedstoragesiteandnon-centralizedstoragesites.Theinventorypositioningandlocationdecisionmodeldevelopedfocusesonsafetystockcost,lateraltransshipmentcost,transportationcost,constructioncostandshortagecostinmulti-echelonsupplychain.Numericalexperimentsshowthat:nomatterwhetherintheechelonofdistributioncentersorretailersthefactorswhichaffecttheselectionfromonesinglecentralizedstoragecenterormultiplecentralizedstoragecentersaredistancebetweendistributioncentersorretailers,unittransshipmentcostandunitinventorycarryingcost.
