Aim:Tofindouttheeffectoflindaneontesticularantioxidantsystemandtesticularsteroidogenesisinadultmalerats.Methods:Adultmaleratswereorallyadministeredwithlindaneatadoseof5.0mg/kgbodyweightperdayfor30days.Twenty-fourhoursafterthelasttreatmenttheratswerekilledusinganestheticether.Testes,epididymis,seminalvesiclesandventralprostatewereremovedandweighed.A10%testicularhomogenatewaspreparedandcentrifugedat4°C.Thesupematantwasusedforvariousbiochemicalestimations.Results:Thebodyweightandtheweightsoftestes,epididymis,seminalvesiclesandventralprostatewerereducedinlindane-treatedrars.Therewasasignificantdeclineintheactivitiesofantioxidantenzymessuperoxidedismutase(SOD),catalaseandglutathionereductasewhileanincreaseinhydrogenperoxide(H2O2)generationwasobserved.Thespecificactivitiesoftesticularsteroidogenicenzymes3β-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenaseand17β-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenaseweredecreased.ThelevelsofDNA,RNAandproteinwerealsodecreasedinlindane-treatedrats.Conclusion:Lindaneinducesoxidativestressanddecreasesantioxidantenzymesinadultmalerats.
