我心中的中国英雄——丁龙

Today,I’dliketotalkaboutmyChinesehero-DingLong.Youmayhaveneverheardofthisperson,butIamdeeplytouchedbyhislifestory.

OnJune28th,1901,theUniversityofColumbiareceivedadonationof$12,500withaletter,sayingitshouldbeusedtosetupaChineseStudiesDepartment,asanonlyrequest.Therewasnotnameinscribedattheendoftheletterbuttwowords:'aChinese'instead.

Basedonthisinformation,youmaythink,oh,thisisprobablyacelebritywhowantedtodosomethinggood.However,peopleknewthedonatornamedDingLongwhowasborninGuangdongwasaservant.HewassoldtoawealthyfamilyintheUnitedStateswhenhewasachild.Andhewasilliterateandunmarriedallhislife.Hehadundergonethehardshipduringhislife,butdonatedallhissavings,becausetherewasastrongvoiceinhishead.HehopedthatChineseculturecouldtakerootinthelandofNorthAmericaandspreadtothewholeworld.Withhispersistenceandhardwork,hisfriendsandevengovernmentofficialsjoinedthedonation.Therefore,thefirstfacultyspecializinginChineselanguage,culture,philosophy,andlawhasbeensetupwhichisnowknownastheEastAsiaDepartmentofColumbiaUniversity.And,inrecognitionoftheseefforts,DingLongwasappointedadistinguishedemeritusprofessorattheUniversityofColumbia.

Today,I’mheretoshareabouthisstory.Ihopethatmorepeoplecanknowabouthimandrememberhim—ourChinesehero:Dinglong—anordinarybutoutstandingpersonwhohasmadeextraordinarycontributiontoculturecommunication.Now,pleaseallowmetocallon—Icallonallstudentstocommunicate,tospreadChineseculturewhileyou’relearningEnglishandletthepeoplefromallovertheworldknowaboutourChinesecultureandfeelaboutourChineseculture.
