Thispaperhighlightspasteffortsindevelopingerosionprocessconceptsthatleadtothedevelopmentofthecurrentprocess-basederosionpredictionmodel,i.e.,WEPP.Recentprogressincludesthedevelopmentofamultiple-boxsystemthatcansimulatehillslopehydrologicconditions.Laboratoryproceduresenablethequantificationofnear-surfacehydrologiceffects,i.e.,artesianseepagevs.drainage,onthesoilerosionprocessandsedimentregime,flowhydraulics,andsedimenttransportanddepositionprocesses.Theserecentfindingsimprovesoilerosionscienceandprovidenewerosioncontrolstrategiesthatmayhaveadditionalenvironmentalbenefitsrelativetothetraditionalerosioncontrolpractices.Thepaperalsodiscussesthepotentialimpactsoftheerosionprocessonerosionmodeldevelopmentandfutureresearchdirectionsofsoilerosionprocessresearchandmodeldevelopment.
