Inpastterroristattacks,vehicleborneimprovisedexplosivedevices(VBIED)havebeentheprimarymannerofattackingbuildingsandinfrastructures.Preventingunauthorizedvehiclesfromapproachingaprotectedareawithanti-ramsystemswouldmaintainanestablishedstandoffdistanceagainstmovingandstationaryvehiclesandconsequentlyreduceblastanddebristhreats.Thisstrategyhasbeenconsideredthefirstlineofdefenceagainstterrorists.Severaltypesofanti-ramdeviceshavebeendevelopedinaccordancewithU.S.DepartmentofStateK-ratingcriteria,forexample,wedgebarriers,risingbeams,sliding/swinggates,anddroparms.However,thesedevicestypicallyneedadeepfoundationforinstallationandcan'tbeimplementedintomanylocationswhereadepthofexcavationislimitedinordertoprotectutilitylinesofbuildingsandinfrastructures.Thispaperpresentsarecentdevelopmentofaseriesofshallowfootinganti-rambollardsystems(SFABS)thatcansatisfyK-12ratingwithonlyfive-inchthickfooting.Ahigh-fidelityphysicsbasedfiniteelementtechniquewithavehiclecrashmodelisusedforpredictinganti-ramcapacityanddeterminingdesignparametersoftheSFABS.Full-scalevehiclecrashtestsofthedevelopedSFABSsystemshavebeencarriedouttovalidatethedesignandanalysis.
