Thedevelopmentofefficientbondingagentsisoneaspectoftheadvancementofrefractories.Basedonanewlydevelopedbindersystem,anewgenerationoftar-resinbondedmagnesiacarbonproductswithhighperformancehasbeendeveloped.Furthermore,thebindersystemcharacterizedbyhighcarbonyieldaftercarbonizationresultsinforminganextremelystrongcarbonbonding.Itcanimproverefractoriespropertiestogetnewproductwithmoreadvantagesthanoldrefractories:moreeconomic,lowercostandlowtoxicity.Tar-resinisnotonlyusedinshapedrefractories,butalsoinmorerefractoriestypes,suchasmonolithicrefractories.ImmersionexperimentsofMgO-Cmonolithicrefractoriessamplesinliquidsteelat1600℃havebeencarriedoutforsteelmakingindustry.TheseexperimentsshowedtheformationofadenseandcontinuousMgOrichlayer,ontheinterfacebetweenrefractoryandsteel,andthepossibleformationofinclusionsaslargeclustersprotrudingfromtherefractorysurface.Forthemechanicalproperties,thepowderwasheatedupto1400℃inairtoremovecarbon,andwassubsequentlyformedintobrickshape.StandardASTMwasusedtodeterminetheMOR,porosityanddensity.Itisfoundthatantioxidantmaterialsplayanimportantroleinimprovingthemechanicalproperties.
