  • 简介:Recentandpaleo-submarinelandslidesarewidelydistributedwithinstrataindeep-waterareasalongcontinentalslopes,uplifts,andcarbonateplatformsonthenorthcontinentalmarginoftheSouthChinaSea(SCS).Inthispaper,high-resolution3Dseismicdataandmultibeamdatabasedonseismicsedimentologyandgeomorphologyareemployedtoassistinidentifyingsubmarinelandslides.Inaddition,depositionmodelsareproposedthatarebasedonspecificgeologicalstructuresandfeatures,andwhichillustratethelocalstressfieldoverentiresubmarinelandslidesindeep-waterareasoftheSCS.TheSCSisoneofthelargestfluvialsedimentsinksinenclosedorsemi-enclosedmarginalseasworldwide.Itthereforeprovidesasetofpreconditionsfortheformationofsubmarinelandslides,includingrapidsedimentaccumulation,formationofgashydrates,andfluidoverpressure.Anewconceptinvolvingtemporalandspatialanalysesistestedtoconstructarelationshipbetweensubmarinelandslidesanddifferenttimescaletriggermechanisms,andthreemechanismsarediscussedinthecontextofspatialscaleandtemporalfrequency:evolutionofslopegradientandoverpressure,globalenvironmentalchanges,andtectonicevents.Submarinelandslidesthataretriggeredbytectoniceventsarethelargestbutoccurlessfrequently,whilesubmarinelandslidestriggeredbythecombinationofslopegradientandoverpressureevolutionarethesmallestbutmostfrequentlyoccurringevents.Insummary,analysisshowsthattheformationofsubmarinelandslidesisacomplexprocessinvolvingtheoperationofdifferentfactorsonvarioustimescales.

  • 简介:Mid-latitudeair-seainteractionisanimportanttopicthatattractsaconsiderableamountofresearchinterest.TheKuroshioExtension(KE)isoneofthemainwesternboundarycurrentsandplaysacriticalroleinthemid-latitudeatmosphericcirculation.ThispaperusestheNCEP/NCARreanalysisandHadleyseasurfacetemperaturedatasetstoinvestigatetheinfluenceofoceanicfrontsintheKEregiononsurfaceairtemperatureinNorthAmericaovertheperiod1949–2014.AsignificantcorrelationwasfoundbetweentheKEfrontintensityandthetemperaturesoverNorthAmericainautumnandwinter.Astrong(weak)KEfrontanomalyinautumnisassociatedwithanincreasing(decreasing)surfacetemperatureoverwesternNorthAmericabutadecreasing(increasing)surfacetemperatureovereasternNorthAmerica.Inwinter,centralNorthAmericawarms(cools)whentheKEfrontisstrong(weak).Theresponseoftheatmosphericcirculation,includingwindinthehighandlowtroposphere,troughs,andridges,tothestrengthening(weakening)oftheKEfrontisthemaincauseofthesechangesinsurfacetemperature.

  • 简介:Eoliandustpreservedindeep-seasedimentsoftheNorthPacificOcean(NPO)isanimportantrecorderofpaleoclimaticandpaleoenvironmentalchangesintheAsianinland.Tobetterunderstandchangesinthedustprovenances,inthisstudydiffusereflectancespectroscopy(DRS)wasusedtoextracttheeoliansignalrecordedinsedimentsofODPHole885ArecoveredfromtheNPO.First,wesystematicallyinvestigatedsievingeffectsontheDRSdata;thenbandpositionsofhematite(obtainedfromthesecondorderderivativecurvesoftheK-MremissionfunctionspectrumderivedfromtheDRS)wereusedtodistinguishdifferentprovenancesoftheeoliandustpreservedinthepelagicsedimentsofthishole.Ourresultsshowthatthesieving(38μm)processcansuppresseffectivelytheexperimentalerrors.EoliansignaturesfromChineseLoessPlateau(CLP)sourcesandnon-CLP-sourceshavebeenidentifiedinthepelagicsedimentsofODPHole885AfromthelatePliocenetotheearlyPleistocene.TheprovenancedifferencesaccountforthediscrepanciesintheeolianrecordsrecoveredfromthepelagicsedimentsintheNPOandprofilesintheCLP.Temporalchangesindustprovenancesarecausedbythelatitudinalmovementofthewesterlyjetmainstream.ThehematiteDRSbandpositionisausefultooltodistinguishtheprovenanceofeoliancomponentspreservedinpelagicsediments.

  • 简介:WhiletheAntarcticSlopeCurrent(ASC)hasbeenintensivelystudiedfortheEastAntarcticaslopeareaandtheWeddellSea,itsfateinthewesternAntarcticPeninsula(WAP)regionremainsmuchlessknown.DatafromtwocruisesconductedneartheSouthShetlandIslands(SSIs)andtheElephantIsland(EI),oneinaustralsummerof2004andoneinaustralwinterof2006,wereanalyzedtoprovideabroadpictureofthecirculationpatternoverthecontinentalslopeofthesurveyedarea,andaninsightintothedynamicalbalanceofthecirculation.Theresultsindicatethatsouthwestwardcurrentsarepresentovertheupperslopeinthestudyarea,indicatingtheASCintheWAPregion.NeartheShackletonGap(SG)northoftheEI,thesouthwestwardslopecurrentsneartheshelfbreakarecharacterizedbyawatermasscolderandfresherthantheambientwater,whichproducescross-slopedensitygradientsandthenverticalshearofthealong-slope(oralong-isobath)velocity.Theverticalshearisassociatedwithareversalofthealong-slopecurrentfromnortheastwardatsurfacetosouthwestwardindeeperlayers,oradepth-intensificationofthesouthwestwardslopecurrents.ThewatermasswithtemperatureandsalinitycharacteristicssimilartotheobservedcoldandfreshwaterisalsorevealedonthesouthernslopeoftheScotiaSea,suggestingthatthiscoldandfreshwaterisoriginatedfromtheScotiaSeaslopeandflowssouthwestwardthroughtheSG.OvertheshelfnorthoftheSSIs,thecoldandfreshwatermassisalsoobservedandoriginatesmainlyfromtheBransfieldStrait.Inthisarea,verticalstructureofthesouthwestwardslopecurrentsisassociatedwiththeonshoreintrusionoftheupperCircumpolarDeepWaterthatcreatescross-slopedensitygradients.

  • 简介:Theroleofwintersea-iceintheLabradorSeaasaprecursorforprecipitationanomaliesoversoutheasternNorthAmericaandWesternEuropeinthefollowingspringisinvestigated.Ingeneralterms,astheseaiceincreases,theprecipitationalsoincreases.Inmoredetail,however,analysesindicatethatboththewintersea-iceandtheseasurfacetemperature(SST)anomaliesrelatedtoincreasesinwintersea-iceintheLabradorSeacanpersistintothefollowingspring.Thesefeaturesplayaforcingroleinthespringatmosphere,whichmaybethephysicalmechanismbehindtheobservationalrelationshipbetweenthewintersea-iceandspringprecipitationanomalies.TheoceanicforcingsinspringincludeArcticsea-iceanomaliesandSSTanomaliesinthetropicalPacificandhigh-latitudeNorthAtlantic.Multi-modelCoupledModelIntercomparisonProjectPhase5andAtmosphericModelIntercomparisonProjectsimulationresultsshowthattheatmosphericcirculationresponsetothecombinationofsea-iceandSSTissimilartothatobserved,whichsuggeststhattheoceanicforcingsareindeedthephysicalreasonfortheenhancedspringprecipitation.SensitivityexperimentsconductedusinganatmosphericgeneralcirculationmodelindicatethattheincreasesinprecipitationoversoutheasternNorthAmericaaremainlyattributabletotheeffectoftheSSTanomalies,whiletheincreasesoverWesternEuropearemainlyduetothesea-iceanomalies.AlthoughmodelsimulationsrevealthattheSSTanomaliesplaytheprimaryroleintheprecipitationanomaliesoversoutheasternNorthAmerica,theobservationalstatisticalanalysesindicatethattheareaofsea-iceintheLabradorSeaseemstobetheprecursorthatbestpredictsthespringprecipitationanomaly.

  • 简介:Background:Themainobjectiveofthisstudywastoexaminetheclimaticsensitivityoftheradialgrowthresponseof13easternwhitepine(PinusstrobusL.)provenancesplantedatseventestsitesthroughoutthenorthernpartofthespecies’nativedistributionineasternNorthAmerica.Methods:Thetestsites(i.e.,Wabeno,Wisconsin,USA;Manistique,Michigan,USA;PineRiver,Michigan,USA;Newaygo,Michigan,USA;TurkeyPoint,Ontario,Canada;Ganaraska,Ontario,Canada;andOrono,Maine,USA)examinedinthisstudywerepartofarange-widewhitepineprovenancetrialestablishedintheearly1960sintheeasternUnitedStatesandCanada.Principalcomponentsanalysis(PCA)wasusedtoexaminethemainmodesofvariation[first(PC1)andsecond(PC2)principalcomponentaxes]inthestandardizedradialgrowthindicesoftheprovenancesateachtestsite.TheyearscoresforPC1andPC2wereexaminedinrelationtoanarrayoftestsiteclimatevariablesusingmultipleregressionanalysistoexaminethecommonalityofgrowthresponseacrossallprovenancestotheclimateofeachtestsite.ProvenanceloadingsonPC1andPC2werecorrelatedwithgeographicparameters(i.e.,latitude,longitude,elevation)andasuiteofbiophysicalparametersassociatedwithprovenanceoriginlocation.Results:TheamountofvariationinradialgrowthexplainedbyPC1andPC2rangedfrom43.4%to89.6%.Dendroclimaticmodelsrevealedthatwhitepineradialgrowthresponsestoclimatewerecomplexanddifferedamongsites.Thekeydendroclimaticrelationshipsobservedincludedsensitivitytohightemperatureinwinterandsummer,coldtemperatureinthespringandfal(i.e.,beginningandendofthegrowingseason),summermoisturestress,potentialsensitivitytostorminduceddamageinspringandfal,andbothpositiveandnegativeeffectsofhigherwintersnowfal.Separationoftheloadingsofprovenancesonprincipalcomponentaxeswasmainlyassociatedwithtemperature-relatedbioclimaticparametersofprovenanceoriginat5ofth
