  • 简介:TyphoonMegi,the13thtyphoonofthe2010typhoonseason,wasselectedforcasestudybyutilizingtheWeatherResearchandForecasting(WRF)model.Twelvesensitivityexperimentswithvariousinitialtropicalcyclone(TC)intensitiesandsizeswereconductedtoinvestigatetheirimpactsonthesimulationoftyphoontrack.InteractionbetweenTCandthewesternPacificsubtropicalhigh(WPSH)wasalsoanalyzedtoexplorethemechanismfortheimpactonTCtrackoftheinitialTCintensityandsize.NumericalresultsindicatethatthesimulatedTCsizeandTCtrackaresensitivetoinitialTCintensityandsize.StrongerinitialTCintensityandlargerinitialTCsizeoftenleadtolargersimulatedTCsizeandmakeTCturnnorthwardearlier.Furtheranalysissuggeststhat,withtheincreaseofinitialTCintensityandsize,moreairmassentersintotheTCregion,whichsubsequentlyreducestheextentofWPSH.Asaresult,thesteeringflowchangessignificantlyandeventuallycausestheTCtoturnnorthwardearlier.ThepresentstudyconfirmsthattheinitialTCintensityandsizehavecertaininfluencesontheTCtracksimulation,whichdemonstratestheimportanceofaccurateinitialconditionforsuccessfulsimulationoftheTCintensityandTCtrack.Moreover,italsodeepensourunderstandingoftheinteractionbetweenTCandWPSH,provideshelpfulcluesfortheTCtrackchangestudy,anddiscussesthefuturedirectionsforimprovementofTCtrackforecast.

  • 简介:Anintercomparisonofsummertime(JJA)subtropicalgeopotentialheightsfromtheERA-40andNCEP/NCARreanalysisisspecificallyconductedoverEastEurasiaandthewesternNorthPacific.TheNCEP/NCARisobviouslylowerthantheERA-40inthemid-to-lowertroposphereinmostregionsofEastEurasiabeforethemid-1970s,butbecomeshigherthantheERA-40afterthemid-1970sandthusdemonstratesstrongerincreasedtrendsduringtheperiodof1958-2001.BothreanalysesarelowerthantheobservationsinmostregionsofChina.TheNCEP/NCARespeciallyshowstremendouslysystematiclowervaluesbeforethemid-1960sanddisplaysabruptchangesbeforethe1970s.SeveralindicesofthewesternNorthPacificsubtropicalhigh(WNPSH),calculatedfrombothreanalyzedsummergeopotentialheights,alsorevealthatthevariationtrendoftheNCEP/NCARisstrongerthanthatoftheERA-40inthemid-to-lowertropospherefrom1958to2001.Throughsingularvaluedecomposition(SVD)analysis,thesummergeopotentialheightsat500hPafromtheERA-40arebetterthantheNCEP/NCARcounterpartsatinteractingwiththeprecipitationovertheEastAsianmonsoonregion.TheresultsindicatethattheNCEP/NCARinthemid-and-lowertropospheremayoverestimateinterdecadalchangesandshouldbeusedcautiouslytostudytherelationshipbetweentheWNPSHandprecipitationovetherEastAsiaMonsoonregionbeforethemid-1970s.

  • 简介:ByemployingtheNCEP/NCARreanalysisdatasets(1000to10hPa,2.5°×2.5°),thethermalforcingimpactsareanalyzedofaneasterlyvortex(shortenedasEV)overthetropicaluppertroposphereonthequasi-horizontalmovementoftheWesternPacificSubtropicalAnticyclone(shortenedasWPSA)during22-25June2003.Therelevantmechanismsarediscussedaswell.Itisshownthatthedistributionandintensityofthenon-adiabaticeffectneartheEVresultintheanomalouseastwardretreatoftheWPSA.TheWPSAprefersextendingtothecolderregion,i.e.,itmovestowardtheregioninwhichthenon-adiabaticheatingisweakeningorthecoolingisstrengthening.DuringtheWPSAretreat,theapparentchangesofnon-adiabaticheatingillustratethecharacteristicsofenhancedcoolingintheeastsideoftheEV.Meanwhile,thecoolinginthewestsideexhibitsaweakenedeastwardtrend,mostprominentlyat300hPainthetroposphere.Theevidenceonthefactorscausingthechangeinthermalconditionisfound:themostimportantcontributiontotheheating-ratetrendistheverticaltransportterm,followedinturnbythelocalchangeintheheatingratetermandthehorizontaladvectionterm.Asaresult,theatmosphericnon-adiabaticheatinggeneratedbytheverticaltransportandlocalchangediscussedaboveismainlyconnectedtotheretreatoftheWPSA.

  • 简介:Inthispaper,acloserelationshipbetweentheintraseasonalvariationofsubtropicalhighoverEastAsiaandtheconvectiveactivitiesaroundtheSouthChinaSeaandthePhilippinesisanalysedfromOLRdata.Thisrelationshipisstudiedbyusingthetheoryofwavepropagatinginaslowlyvaryingmediumandbyusingaquasi-geoslrophic,linear,sphericalmodelandtheIAP-GCM,respectively.TheresultsshowthatwhentheSSTiswarmingaroundthewesterntropicalPacificorthePhilippines,theconvectiveactivitiesareintensifiedaroundthePhilippines.Asaconsequence,thesubtropicalhighwillbeintensifiedoverEastAsia.ThecomputedresultsalsoshowthatwhentheanomalyofconvectiveactivitiesarecausedaroundthePhilippines,ateleconnectionpatternofcirculationanomalieswillbecausedoverSouthAsia,EastAsiaandNorthAmerica.

  • 简介:TheNCEP/NCARIIdailymeanreanalysisdataandobservedprecipitationdataareemployedtoinvestigatethewestwardextensionofthewesternPacificsubtropicalhigh(WPSH)duringtheheavyrainperiodoverthesouthernChinainJune2005.Resultsshowthattheremayexistarelationshipbetweentheeast-westshiftoftheWPSHandtheprocessofasouthernChinaheavyrain.TheanalysisindicatesthattheverticalmotionintheWPSHareaismainlycausedbythelatentheatreleaseofmonsoonrainbeltsonitsnorthernandsouthernsides.TheverticalmotioncouldcausetheaccumulationofairmassinthecenterandwestoftheWPSH,whichleadstoitsstrengthening.TheappearanceofthenorthernandsouthernmonsoonrainbeltscouldnotonlyenhancetheWPSHbystrengtheningthedescendingdraft,butalsoexcitethedevelopmentofpositivevorticityandrestricttheWPSH'smovementinthenorth-southdirection.Moreover,theIndianmonsoonrainfalltothewestoftheWPSHmayexcitethedevelopmentofanticyclonicvorticityonitseasternside,whichleadstothewestwardextensionoftheWPSH.
