简介:Temporalenvelopeisalowfrequencyamplitudemodulationconveyingsegmentalandsuprasegmentalinformationduringspeechperception.Unfortunately,weseldomfindourselvesincompletelyquietlisteningenvironmentsandnoise,commonlyfoundinthesurroundingenvironment,obscuresboththefinestructurecuesandpartlythetemporalenvelopecuesinspeech.Availabletemporalcontentofspeechemanatingfromnoiseisoftenenoughtoconveyrequiredinformationinnormalhearingindividuals.However,thecaseisdifferentinolderadults(withandwithouthearingloss)wholacksuchcapabilitiesduetotheimpairmentintemporalprocessing.Thiscallsattentionofaresearchertodelineatetheimportanceoftemporalenhancementofspeechinimprovingspeechperception.Therearemanytemporalenvelopestrategiesavailableintheliterature,buteachonehasitsownlacunae.Anenvelopeenhancementbyadeepbandmodulation(DBM)isfoundtobebeneficialforthoseindividualswhohavehadatemporalprocessingimpairment.Thereasoncouldbeattributedtothe15dBenhancementinthetemporalenvelopebandwidthbetween3and30Hz,extractedfromeachchannel,whichsignificantlyincreasesthemodulationdepthsuchthatmaskingofaconsonantbyavowelisminimized.Additionally,outputofdeepbandmodulatedspeechisrescaledsuchthatitsdurationincreasesanditprovidesrelativelyeasyaccesstothewordofthelexicon.Thus,inthenearfuture,withmoreexperimentsrelatedtoDBMalgorithm,itcanbeutilizedintherehabilitativedevicestolessentheimpactofthetemporalprocessingimpairment.

简介:Thepresentstudywasdesignedtoexaminespeechrecognitioninpatientswithsensorineuralhearinglosswhenthetemporalandspectralinformationinthespeechsignalswereco-varied.Foursubjectswithmildtomoderatesensorineuralhearinglosswererecruitedtoparticipateinconsonantandvowelrecognitionteststhatusedspeechstimuliprocessedthroughanoise-excitedvocoder.Thenumberofchannelswasvariedbetween2and32,whichdefinedspectralinformation.Thelowpasscutofffrequencyofthetemporalenvelopeextractorwasvariedfrom1to512Hz,whichdefinedtemporalinformation.Resultsindicatethatperformanceofsubjectswithsen-sorineuralhearinglossvariedtremendouslyamongthesubjects.Forconsonantrecognition,patternsofrelativecontributionsofspectralandtemporalinformationweresimilartothoseinnormal-hearingsubjects.Theutilityoftemporalenvelopeinformationappearedtobenormalinthehearing-impairedlisteners.Forvowelrecognition,whichdependedpredominatelyonspectralinformation,theperformanceplateauwasachievedwithnumbersofchannelsashighas16-24,muchhigherthanexpected,giventhatthefrequencyselectivityinpatientswithsensorineuralhearinglossmightbecompromised.Inordertounderstandthemechanismsonhowhearing-impairedlistenersutilizespectralandtemporalcuesforspeechrecognition,futurestudiesthatinvolvealargesampleofpatientswithsensorineuralhearinglosswillbenecessarytoelucidatetherelationshipbetweenfrequencyselectivityaswellascentralprocessingcapabilityandspeechrecognitionperformanceusingvocodedsignals.
