VarioustypesofgeologicalhazardsexistintheSouthChinaSea.Indynamicssense,theycanbecategorizedinto5principalgenetictypesrelatedtoeffectsofhydraulicdynamics,gaseousactivity,soilmechanics,gravityandtectonism,respectively.Integratedanalysesindicatethatthegeologicalhazardsassociatedwithvolcanoes,earthquakesandfracturesaremainlydistributedintectonicallyactiveregions,whereasthoseresultingfrommudflows,landslidesanddiapirsareusuallyconcentratedintheregionofslope,thatshallowgas,highpressuregaspocketsandsoftintercalationsaremajorpotentialgeologicalhazardsintheinnershelf,andthatstronghydraulicdynamics,especiallystormtide,isoneofthemajorcausesofgeologicalhazardsinthelittoralareas.ThegeologicalhazardsthatoccurredintheSouthChinaSeaarealsocharacterizedbyperiodicity,successionand,toacertainextent,unpredictabilityinadditiontoregionalization.
