ByusingNCEP/NCARdailyreanalysisdataanddailyprecipitationdataof740stationsinChina,relationshipsbetweenthepositionvariationoftheWestPacificsubtropicalhigh(WPSH)andthediabaticheatingduringpersistentandintenserainsintheYangtze-HuaiheRiversbasinarestudied.TheresultsshowthatthepositionvariationofWPSHiscloselyassociatedwiththediabaticheating.Therearestrongapparentheatingsourcesandmoisturesinksinboththebasin(tothenorthofWPSH)andthenorthofBayofBengal(tothewestofWPSH)duringpersistentandintenserainevents.Inthebasin,Q1zbeginstoincrease3daysaheadofintenserainfall,maximizes2dayslaterandthenreducesgradually,butitchangeslittleafterprecipitationends,thuspreventingtheWPSHfrommovingnorthward.InthenorthofBayofBengal,2daysaheadofstrongrainfalloverthebasin,Q1zstartstoincreaseandpeaks1dayaftertherainoccurs,leadingtothewestwardextensionofWPSH.Afterwards,Q1zbeginsdecliningandtheWPSHmakesitseastwardretreataccordingly.Basedonthecompleteverticalvorticityequation,inmid-troposphere,theverticalvariationofheatinginthebasinisfavorabletotheincreaseofcyclonicvorticitynorthofWPSH,whichcounteractsthenorthwardmovementofWPSHandfavorsthepersistenceofrainbandsoverthebasin.TheverticalvariationofheatinginthenorthofBayofBengalisinfavoroftheincreaseofanti-cyclonicvorticitytothewestofWPSH,whichinducesthewestwardextensionofWPSH.
