Dryseparationofironmineralfromlow-gradecoal-serieskaolininHubeiProvinceofChinawasinvestigated.ThestructureandchemicalcompositionofthekaolinoreweredeterminedbyX-raydiffraction(XRD)andX-rayFluorescence(XRF)analyses.Thenarrowparticlesizerangeclassification,drymagneticseparationandcalcinationwerecarriedouttoevaluatetheparticlesizedistribution,andtherelationbetweenthecontentofironandthewhiteness.Experimentalresultsrevealedthatthehighestcontentofiron(3.70%)inkaolinorewasintheparticlesizerangefrom60to74μm,andpyritewasthemainoccurrenceofironinthekaolinore.Drymagneticseparationshowedthattheremovalrateofironinkaolinorecouldbeincreasedobviouslyaftercalcination,andtherateofironremovalwas60%intheparticlesizerangefrom60to74μm.Aspyritecanbetransformedintohematitethroughcalcination,thermodynamicstudiesandXRDanalysisshowedthatthemaximumcontentofhematitewasobtainedat900℃,whichwouldbemorebeneficialtomagneticseparation.
