γ—Aminobutyric acid transporter (GAT1) overexpression in mouse affects the testicular morphology

γ-AminobutyricacidandGABAergicreceptorswerepreviouslyreportedtobedistributedinreproductivesystemsbesidesCNSandpredictedtoparticipateinthemodulationoftesticularfunction.γ-Aminobutyricacidtransporterwasimplicatedtobeinvolvedinthisprocess.However,thepotentialroleofγ-aminobutyrictransporterintestishasnotbeenexplored.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheexistenceofmouseγ-aminobutyricacidtransportersubtypeI(mGAT1)intestis.Wild-typeandtransgenicmice,whichoverexpressingmGAT1inavarietyoftissues,especiallyintestis,wereprimarilystudiedtoapproachtheprofileofmGAT1intestis.MicewithoverexpressedmGAT1developnormallybutwithreducedmassandsizeoftestisascomparedwithwild-type.Testicularmorphologyoftransgenicmiceexhibitedovertabnormalitiesincludingfocaldamageofthespermatogenicepitheliumaccompaniedbycapillariesproliferationandincreaseddiameterofseminiferoustubuleslumen.Reducednumberofspermatidswasalsofoundinsomeseminiferoustubules.OurresultsclearlydemonstratethepresenceofGAT1inmousetestisandimplythatGAT1ispossiblyinvolvedintesticularfunction.
